Fermentation vs probiotics for your skin – why the former is more effective

Fermentation is a natural chemical process where bacteria break down substances and nutrients, and effectively form new ones. You may already know some fermented drinks and foods – for example, kombucha, kimchi or sauerkraut – they are produced by plant fermentation. Fermented skincare means products containing natural plant-based ingredients that went through a fermentation process which further enhances the overall bioavailability of all active ingredients thus being more effectively absorbed by the skin.

Probiotics are the microbes that live in your body, including your gut and your skin. Some of the most well-known human bacteria species include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia, and Bacillus. Probiotics also act as core “catalyst” ingredients in a fermentation process, which naturally grows the beneficial probiotic bacteria further by feeding them with prebiotics and other beneficial nutrients, and producing a legion of bioactive postbiotics as an outcome.

How does fermented, biotic skincare work?

When applied topically, a skincare product that contains prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics can have many positive effects. First and foremost they will fortify and strengthen the skin so that it is protected against various environmental stressors.

The job of biotic skincare products is also to restore balance to the skin’s microbiome and increase the quantity of good bacteria in the skin. Furthermore, it strengthens a compromised skin barrier, allowing the skin to function better and feel stronger, while keeping the skin’s pH healthy and balanced. When the skin’s microbiome is healthy, it is also able to produce more natural humectants and attract moisture into the skin.

Biotic, or bio-fermented, skin care benefits 

Fermentation enhances the potency of already quality ingredients, increases antioxidant levels, making the formula all the more effective and enabling additional, powerfully hydrating and anti-aging functionalities.

Fermentation also creates new skin-enhancing properties. During the slow bio-fermentation process (the one we use in Circulove), new nutrient metabolites are formed, such as peptides, vitamins, probiotics, and enzymes. Fermented ingredients are further enriched during the longer, slow fermentation period, and help keep the skin’s pH healthy and balanced, thus preventing the skin from easily becoming red and irritated. Fermented ingredients fortify the skin barrier against irritating and damaging agents, which is especially beneficial for thin, aging, sensitive, and irritation-prone skin.
